AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A suspect is now behind bars after a 2-year-old was killed in a shooting.
We learned the suspect, Marquie Gunter, was not even supposed to be around kids due to his conviction on child molestation charges.
However, he was living with the mother of Ja'Ziah Pollard, the child who died in the shooting, at a home on Meadowbrook Drive.
Deputies say Gunter and his girlfriend got into an argument Tuesday night over the use of a car, that's when shots were fired. One of those shots struck Pollard, killing her.
The domestic dispute led to him allegedly kicking the open door and shooting into the home.
JaZiah's mother wrote in an email that she feels "trapped in a dream and can't get out."
"Just have to pray and keep praying," said neighbor Zelda Gantt. "It's one of the worst you can think of."
"I’m very sure that he didn’t mean to do it but I just hope a pray that the gun violence ends," said neighbor David Jones.
"It's just not right, I saw the police cars and with that many lights, it's got to be bad," said neighbor Leroy Roberts.
A question many of you have asked is how could someone shoot at a child? We asked the Richmond County Sheriff's Office if Gunter was intentionally aiming at Ja’Ziah or did he just shoot blindly into the home.
Right now, investigators are not releasing those details.
