AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- The Richmond County Sheriff's Office mourns another loss, 61-year-old Deputy James Wallace.
He's the second deputy to die this week after investigator Christian Gandy died in a motorcycle crash on Tuesday.
The death of Deputy James Wallace has left people with heavy hearts.
Former RCSO Employee and Friend of Wallace Miranda Scritchfield said, "I was at work and one of the other deputies called me and I just broke down, I broke down."
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says Wallace suffered an apparent heart attack while he was going through the Sheriff's annual physical fitness test.
Sheriff Roundtree started the tests in 2014 to make sure deputies are healthy; something the job requires.
Back in 2014, RCSO Chief Deputy Patrick Clayton said, "The thing that kills police officers more than anything is not a bullet or a knife from a suspect. It's usually heart disease."
Deputy Wallace was 61 years old.
He started working for the Sheriff's Office in 2010, and it didn't take long for him to get to know the other deputies.
"He was like the grandfather he always made sure we had what we needed and he gave us advice and he helped us with a crossword puzzle, just different things like he was just an awesome man," said Scritchfield.
Scritchfield worked with Wallace for three years at the Sheriff's Office.
"Every time you saw him you had to laugh you had to smile cause he was just that type of person, he brought it out in you," said Scritchfield.
Now the Sheriff's Office and all who knew James Wallace are left grieving his sudden loss.
"Wallace was a great deputy, he always made sure he came to work, and he was always on task and always made sure his stuff was completed and their really gonna miss him, he's going to be missed by everybody," said Scritchfield.
The Richmond County Sheriff's Office also lost a retired deputy this week, Herb Tordoff after battling cancer.
Investigator Christian Gandy's family will be having a Celebration of Life for him Saturday afternoon at 2.
We will put more information out on the services for Wallace and Tordoff as we get it.
