News 12 This Morning
Augusta, GA (WRDW/WAGT) -- Thomas Poteet and Son funeral home is staffed a little different than other funeral homes in the area. They have a four-legged friend that is helping families ease the burden of losing a loved one.
Owner Thomas Poteet tells News 12 that a dog is a man's best friend and his situation is no different.
"He's my best friend, guarantee ya, he's my best friend. Anyone who owns a dog will know that their dog is their best friend," Poteet explains.
However, his dog is a little more than that.
"He's our official greeter; he would be a grief therapist if you had to put a title on it because he puts a smile on everybody's face," he says.
His name's Max, he's seven years old, and no one really knows what breed he is but it hasn't stopped them from completely falling in love.
"I've seen many people in here crying until max came to them, then he puts a smile on their face; it makes things a lot easier."
Max is the only funeral home grief dog in Augusta. Thomas says the competition just isn't getting it right.
"Well you know that's the rest of their problems," he said.
As for Max, he wouldn't have things any other way.
"Oh that's wonderful, oh look a pretty little dog, oh they love him," Thomas laughs.
Max is at Thomas Poteet and Son's funeral home for about twenty days out of the month. He spends the rest of his time at home with his best friend, Thomas!
