AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- Augusta's First Distillery opened on the Riverwalk a few months ago. It sits right on 8th and Reynolds Street. They may have just opened, but the owners have been at this a long time.
Something's happen by chance. That's how David Long found himself in the distillery business.
"We were only going to be open on Saturdays, and it grew into distribution," said Long.
They started in Edgefield with the Carolina Moon Distillery, but always had their eye's on Augusta.
"We opened somewhat purposefully quietly," explained Long, "We know from experience there are going to be kinks in the process."
Those kinks haven't last long though. Second City Distillery opened in April.
"Now we're starting to gain some traction. The trend line looks really good," said Long.
If you're looking for small batch liquor, it won't get much smaller than this.
"This is where the conversion of grains happens," explained Long, "This part of the process takes about a day."
From there, the fermentation process begins, and it ends in the pot still.
"This is an old school set up, its been around for hundreds of years," said Long describing the pot still set up.
Their Augusta location distills bourbon, whiskey, vodka, gin, and rum. Most of the process, from beginning to end, is done by hand, even the labeling.
"You won't see anybody probably smaller than us," said Long.
You also won't find anyone else who can call themselves Augusta's first distillery.
Second City Distillery has a tasting room and drinks on tap. They also are planning to create blackberry, cinnamon, and salted caramel whiskies by this fall.
