RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) -- In April, a fire in Spearfish, South Dakota killed five children, including six-year-old Phibie. This Christmas, her mother, Shannon Huggett, wanted to give back in her daughter's memory.
"I thought as a family, we needed to do something for others because of the community," said Huggett. "Many of them were so gracious to us. They gave and gave and gave, so I needed to return that somehow."
Hugget with her 10 year-old-son, Noah, along with family friends, went shopping at Target on Wednesday night to buy Christmas gifts for a local family in need, in honor of Phibie.
The family was chosen from a list of 75 nominations, and in the end, they picked a family of a mother with four children and one on the way.
To fund this shopping trip, friends of Huggett's family donated money and ended up donating a grand total of $700. Every single penny will be spent on the kids.
This will be the first Christmas without Phibie, and while Huggett said it will be hard, she knows Phibie would love what they are doing.
"It helps to know we are doing some good. Phibie was loving and caring and she taught me a lot about caring, so she would be happy about this," she said.
