NORTH AUGUSTA, SC (WRDW/WAGT) -- Dave Leverett, Elizabeth Jones, and Stetson Corbitt made history today and the first candidates ever to run on the Constitution Party ticket.
"You know, the Constitution Party says "we the people" and that's the focus of what we're trying to do," says Dave Leverett, At-large candidate.
The three all running for at-large bids to city council say transparency and accountability are the foundation of their platform.
"I think the citizens are wanting transparency in government and we're not getting that at all," says Elizabeth Jones, At-large candidate.
“I don't think they have the interaction that they think they need with the city council," At-large candidate, Stetson Corbitt says.
They're also big on financial responsibility.
The city has taken on hundreds of millions of dollars in loan payments with big investments in Riverside Village and a new public safety building.
"We've got to have development. But we've got to balance it."
"We've had a lot of focus on the Riverfront in North Augusta, and there have been a lot of other areas that have gone by the wayside."
They feel decisions made without public input are becoming the norm and that needs to stop.
"I'm gonna say the word a little condescending to the citizens."
"I'd like to have some accountability for the ordinances and who sponsors them or who brings them before the city council."
Their party slogan is "A New Beginning," which is what they hope to give the city after a special election on February 12th.
"We'd like to present a platform and have them decide whether it's important or not to them--and that's a choice we haven't had in a long time."
"We will be working together and running as a team to address and bring to life all the changes the citizens of North Augusta are asking for."
The team says they plan to campaign together and host several events leading up to February's special election. The Constitution Party of North Augusta will also be having its first official meeting on January 30th.
