Richard Rogers is the anchor for News 12 First at 5, News 12 at 6 O'Clock, & 11 o'clock. He's been a member of the News 12 Team since October 1993 and has been in TV news since 1981.
Richard has won a number of awards over the years. He earned a Silver Circle Lifetime Achievement award by the National Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences Southeast Chapter in 2017.
He's been named Best Anchor by the Georgia Associated Press and Best TV Personality by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. Richard's awards include a GABBY for his tour of the James Brown Estate and AP awards for "Best Newscast," "Best Feature" and "Best Series." Richard has also been voted Best Of Augusta and "Best TV Personality" by readers of Columbia County Magazine.
Richard is a Georgia native who grew up grew up on the coast in Brunswick. Before coming to News 12, he worked as a news anchor at WTLV-TV in Jacksonville, Fla., WWAY-TV in Wilmington, N.C., and WTOC-TV and WSAV-TV in Savannah, Ga.
Since coming to Augusta, Richard has anchored many live events for News 12, from The Masters, to the Olympic Torch Run and the Children's Miracle Network Telethon. Richard has also reported dozens of live breaking news events, from hurricanes to the Atlanta Olympic games. His field anchoring from the scene of a plane crash in Augusta helped win News 12 a prestigious national Edward R. Murrow Award.
One of his favorite assignments is to report live from the Augusta National Golf Club during The Masters. Richard has covered a wide range of stories there from Tiger Woods' first win to Arnold Palmer's last competitive round. He proudly admits his own 7-iron is still on the bottom of the famous pond on #16, having slipped out of his hand during a rainy round at Augusta National. As he puts it, "That club will spend many more nights at the National than I ever will."
Richard is a member of North Augusta's First Baptist Church and the Augusta Rotary Club. He's a volunteer reader for local schools and community organizations including United Way, The Alzheimer's Association, The Lydia Project and Special Olympics. He's also a drummer who's performed with the Augusta Amusements Big Band, and News 12's in-house band "Breaking News." He has also volunteered as a narrator for Symphony Orchestra Augusta and the Savannah River Winds.
Richard graduated with honors from Truett McConnel College in Cleveland, Ga., and Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. He's the founding chairman of the Broadcast Advisory Board at GSU. In 2005 he was named Distinguished Alumnus for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
He met his wife, Jill, when they were both on the air at WTOC-TV in Savannah, Ga. She's a former news anchor and weather forecaster and now a full-time mom. When Richard isn't spending time with his family or playing the drums, he likes to listen to music (preferably on vinyl) , play golf and hang out on the Georgia coast.
