AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Garrett Elementary School students planted the first seeds in a new garden and learning space on Tuesday morning.

They unveiled a new garden learning space in honor of two Garrett staff members who passed away.

Students will go to the Alston and Young Memorial Stem Garden to grow fruits and vegetables, but that’s not all.

“They will be able to sell some of the food and they will learn how to make a profit and things of that nature and those are some of the many things they can get from this garden,” said Stacey Walk, principal.

In addition to honoring their two staff members, they also say this is in honor of Red Ribbon Week.

For the past seven years, the school has earned first place for the Governors Red Ribbon Campaign.

The ceremony began at 10 a.m. at the school located at 1100 Eisenhower Drive in Augusta.
