HARLEM, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A stabbing Wednesday claimed the life of a woman at a home between Grovetown and Harlem.

The slaying was reported at 12:15 p.m. at 3738 Gordon Highway in Columbia County.

Dispatchers said they got a call from 82-year-old Robert Bennett stating that he had just stabbed his wife.

When deputies arrived, he was found sitting in the living room, where he was taken into custody without incident.

The victim, 60-year-old Michelle Bennett, was found in the dining room slumped over the table with a large kitchen knife in her back, according to deputies.

First responders worked on the victim with unsuccessful results.

Robert Bennett has been charged with murder and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime, according to deputies. No bond has been set.

Friends of the couple say this is unfathomable.

We’re told Robert was kind to those who were friends of the couple.

“It’s almost like I can picture it. It’s not something I was looking to see in the news today. I feel very bad for them,” said Jonathan Francis.

A mother, wife, lover of horses, and friend is how Michelle will be remembered by those who loved her.

Friends and former co-workers expressed love for their beloved “Shelly.”

“I’m in shock. Shelly was such a sweet person. One of the greatest people I’ve ever worked with,” said Rainy Reddick in a Facebook comment.

Her character is what leaves those who knew her in shock.

Francis added, “She was very upbeat and very, very nice. At the time I was there, she just wanted me to take their little gas issue, which was to get their fireplace going. I was happy to do that.”
