AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - With the latest surge in COVID cases easing, the Richmond County School System is dropping its mask mandate on campuses starting Tuesday.

The district had held steadfast to the mask mandate since the start of the school year, but announced the change Friday on its website.

“Presently, the spread rate of COVID-19 in our community is less than 8 percent,” the district said. “As that number continues to trend downward and following guidance from our local partners, the Richmond County School System will transition to masks optional in classrooms and facilities beginning Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Due to federal transportation mandates, masks will continue to be required for drivers and passengers on school buses.”

The district said the rules could change again if the need arises.

“The school system will continue implementing other COVID-19 response strategies and actively monitoring COVID-19 trends and spread rates,” the district said. “Mask protocol may be revised based on community data and public health guidance.”
