EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Walmart in Evans will open a training academy for the public, offering free classes in subjects like résumé building, budgeting, test preparation and more.

It’s one of more than 200 Walmarts across the country that will be eventually be offering the Community Academy classes in person, although at launch, the classes are fully virtual.

For the past few years, the academies have focused on training associates to succeed in their jobs and build skills for the future.

“Community Academy began with a question: How can we help?” Walmart Vice President of Learning Andy Trainor wrote in announcing the program “With so many communities struggling economically and education sometimes out of reach, we recognized a need that we’re uniquely suited to fill. Our goal is to help people invest in themselves, increase upward mobility and create fundamentally stronger communities as a result.”

Courses are grouped into five themes – community, personal finance, home, career progression and technology. Offerings will expand throughout the year.

In addition to the Evans store on Washington Road, Georgia locations that will eventually be offering in-person classes include Cordele, Lawrenceville, Stockbridge, Alpharetta, Woodstock and Hampton. South Carolina locations include Florence, Laurens, Walterboro, Columbia and Rock Hill.
