I-TEAM: Fire chief candidates setting the record straight
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Some big developments today in a selection process that’s been on hold. The I-Team spent the day talking with two of the other candidates who hope they are still in the running to be the next fire chief.
The men Anthony Jackson and Sterling Jones want to set the record straight. Both say they have never been convicted of any crime and have clean background records. We did our own investigation and found no felony convictions for either.
This is important because today the I-Team talked to several commissioners who were under the impression that both men had felony charges in their history. That false information was published by another media company in town. They have since published a retraction about Jones.
The I-Team talked to Jackson by phone within the last hour to ask him about his past and he denied any wrongdoing and was unaware of what he says is false report until he talked to the I-Team. But that questionable information made laps around the city today.
Anthony Jackson gave us this statement.
“I’ve never been convicted of any felony. My record is clean. My resume speaks for itself. I’ve been a professional my whole entire public safety and fire service career…I have always been an effective leader. I signed a consent form to release my information last Friday and I hope to still be considered for the position.”
Sterling Jones who used to work here in Augusta and now works near Atlanta confirmed for the I-Team he also has no criminal background. He declined to comment any further because he says he also still hopes to be considered for the job.
