Coroner identifies man shot dead by Aiken County deputies
WARRENVILLE, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Aiken County deputies fatally shot a man who ran at them with a knife he was brandishing as he threatened neighbors early Monday, authorities said,
Around 1:17 a.m., deputies responded to 115 Joes Park Road in Warrenville for reports of a male armed with a knife who was making several attempts to attack nearby residents, authorities said.
As deputies arrived, they spotted the suspect, who ran toward them brandishing his weapon, authorities said.
Deputies shot the man, then rendered aid to him until Aiken County emergency medical crews arrived, later pronouncing him dead.
Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables identified the dead man as 45-year-old Daryl Dye of Joes Park Road.
There were no reports of injuries from residents of the trailer park or deputies.
Sheriff Michael Hunt asked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to conduct an investigation into the shooting.
SLED’s goal is to conduct a thorough, independent criminal investigation as timely as is possible under the circumstances, agency spokesman Tommy Crosby said.
SLED investigators will conduct interviews with all potential witnesses, collect all relevant evidence and forensically test evidence as needed. Information gathered will be summarized in a case file report to be submitted to prosecutors.
The incident in Aiken County was the third officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2021. In 2020, there were 49 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina; two involved the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
