BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A pair of suspects looking to break into cars in the Burkehaven neighborhood got more than they bargained for after an astute homeowner detained them at gunpoint early Friday morning.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the neighborhood around 4 a.m. and found two people being detained by the homeowner.

“Burke County Native and homeowner Justin Chance was vigilant in those early hours and observed two individuals entering vehicles on his property. Without hesitation, Mr. Chance showed responsible gun ownership, overwhelming restraint and lawfully engaged the suspects at gunpoint until deputies arrived,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said.

An investigation into the incident continues, but the sheriff’s office specifically thanked Chance for being a “steward” of the community.

The suspects, meanwhile, have not yet been identified.
