AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Coroner’s Office says a 12-year-old is dead after a drive-by shooting early Saturday in Aiken County.

Edward “Junior” F. McKenzie Jr., 12, was shot inside his home in the 1000 block of Wyman Street. The Aiken Department of Public Safety responded to the residence for shots being fired at 3:58 a.m.

“I just heard continuous gunshots fired. I lost count after 7. It was like they unloaded a clip,” said neighbor Yolanda West.

McKenzie Jr. was pronounced dead on the scene at 4:40 a.m. from at least one gunshot wound. He will be autopsied Monday morning in Newberry.

A 13-year-old also suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, and was treated at the scene. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

“Right now as a parent I-- I’m terrified. So close to home like this, I think it’s time for us to move on now. It’s unsafe for my children,” said West.

Friends of Junior say he loved baseball and had a good sense of humor.

“He was a goofy person and he was kind, he was loving, and respectful to others. And he was a good little boy,” said Cinnate Stukes, a friend of his. Stukes just saw Junior a day prior to the shooting.

“I had just saw him at the fair last night and then I saw him all over the news this morning. My last words to him would have been I love you and be good,” said Stukes.
