From Meteorologist Tim Strong: Downed trees and power lines have left millions of people without power, and at least 17 are reported dead across seven states. New York City is among the hardest hit areas, where a record 13 feet of storm surge flooded roads, rail yards, tunnels and subway stations.
Sandy has transitioned to a post-tropical cyclone and is moving northwest across southern Pennsylvania. It is expected to turn northward into western New York this evening and continue into Canada tomorrow. Maximum sustained winds remain near 65 mph with higher gusts. Rainfall will total of 3 to 8 inches over New England and the mid-Atlantic, with isolated amount of 12 inches possible.
Snowfall is expected to total 2 to 3 feet in the mountains of West Virginia through Wednesday, with locally higher amounts in some areas. The Great Lakes region will feel Sandy's impacts today, with winds approaching 70 mph and significant flooding expected along the lake shores of northwest Indiana, Chicago, southwest Michigan, northern Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania and western New York.
