Founded in 1908, the Coker Singers is the premiere choral ensemble at Coker College. The choir is composed of music majors, music minors, and students at large. The ensemble presents concerts throughout the academic year as the official choral performing organization of the College. In addition to local concerts, the Coker Singers regularly tour along the Southeastern United States singing in such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the U.S. Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC. On February 8 of this year the Coker Singers joined forces with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra for a rare performance of Sergei Prokofiev's sonic spectacular work Alexander Nevsky. This marked the sixth collaboration in eight years between the two ensembles.
The Coker Chamber Singers is one of four choral ensembles at Coker College. The choir was formed ten years ago to offer singers an opportunity to perform more challenging repertoire and to travel more often for performance and recruiting purposes. This auditioned ensemble of fourteen to sixteen singers performs choral chamber works from all musical periods. The choir most recently toured in Washington, DC (2012) and New York City (2013).
A Coker College faculty member since 2002, Dr. William Carswell is the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Music in the College’s Department of Music, Theater and Dance. In addition to conducting the Coker Singers, Chamber Singers, and Men’s Vocal Ensemble, he has taught courses in choral literature, choral conducting and music education. In 2012 Dr. Carswell was named Music Director and Conductor of The Masterworks Choir in Florence, SC after having completed five seasons as Music Director and Conductor of the Columbia Choral Society in Columbia, SC. Dr. Carswell has appeared as a clinician, guest conductor or adjudicator across the Southeastern US, as well as in Austria, Bulgaria, England, and France. He has presented sessions on choral literature, choral methods, and rehearsal techniques for various state chapters of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education. An accomplished conductor and educator, Dr. Carswell received the prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award by the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities in recognition of his accomplishments and commitment to excellence in collegiate teaching. Dr. Carswell holds a D.M.A. degree in conducting from the University of South Carolina, a Master of Music degree in conducting from Florida State University, and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Appalachian State University.
