Children’s Week 2014
Augusta Partnership for Children, Inc. presents Children's Week!!
Kick-Off Celebration, Friday, October 3, 10:15 – 11:00 a.m.
Jessye Norman Amphitheatre Head Start, Pre-K and daycare/home schooled students from Richmond and surrounding county schools, as well as parents and teachers attend the Kick-Off Celebration. This activity proclaims the week as Children’s Week and includes a proclamation by the mayor or appointed commissioner, performances and a headlining act.
Teen Maze, Saturday, October 4, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School The Teen Maze has been described as a life-size game board to help teens see firsthand the consequences of life choices. There will be volunteers interacting with the youth in a fun, but serious way, to convey important information about various health and educational issues. The purpose of the Maze is to challenge youth to graduate and obtain a career without getting pregnant, obtaining a sexually transmitted disease, going to prison, or losing their life along the way to drugs and/or alcohol.
Family Festival, Sunday, October 5, 1:00 – 5:00 pm.
Augusta Commons Over 30 youth serving agencies/organizations and colleges and universities set-up display tables with information about their various programs and/or services. Alongside the information are interactive games, give-a-ways and arts and crafts for the kids to enjoy. Local musical artist, dancers and performers entertain the crowds, as they visit booths and enjoy various concessions. The Festival also features a Children’s Costume Walk, Mascot Olympiad and Showdown and Diaper Derby.
Students Who Care Scholarship Luncheon, Monday, October 6, 12:00 p.m. Augusta Rotary Club (*By invitation only) Scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00 are awarded to Richmond County high school Seniors who have demonstrated significant volunteerism and community service work, and maintained good academic standing through their secondary education. The Rotary Club of Augusta, International Paper and James M. Hull Rotary Educational Fund sponsored this event in the past.
Children’s Story Time, October 7 -9, 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Augusta Public Library Head Start and daycare center personnel bring their students to experience the art of storytelling and to encourage reading. Children attending the event will enjoy 15 minute storytelling sessions by local celebrities and volunteers. Each child, also leaves with his/her very own book or special gift. This event is held in conjunction with the Augusta Public Library.
Legislative Breakfast, Wednesday, October 9, 7:00 – 9:00 a.m.
Location TBD During the early morning hours, legislators, senators, agency personnel, and consumers of services come together to discuss pertinent issues affecting children and families in Richmond County, over breakfast. The issues and recommendations presented are developed for the agenda during the Augusta Partnership for Children, Inc.’s May meeting.
