Writers Weekend returns to GRU
Event Dates and Times
Georgia Regents University
The weekend kicks off with “An Evening with Bronwen Dickey” from 7:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6, in Room 170 of University Hall. Dickey is an essayist and journalist who writes regularly for The Oxford American. Her work has also appeared in Houghton Mifflin’s Best American Travel Writing 2009, Newsweek, Outside, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Independent Weekly, among other publications. The event is free and open to the public.
Visiting authors will participate in readings, workshops, and conversations with local students and community members Feb. 7-8. Visiting writers include Susan Tekulve, Dr. Blake Brandes, Dr. Glenn Parris, Arial Alexis, and others. GRU Creative Writing faculty will also give readings and lead workshops for Augusta-area high school students.
“We want this to be a community event,” said Anna C. Harris, Program Director. “This is a conference for emerging writers, no matter the age. It’s an opportunity to engage and network with writers, each other, and the community.”
The weekend is presented by the Department of English and Foreign Languages and honors Dr. Lillie B. Johnson, who retired last year as chair of the department. The weekend is co-sponsored with the GRU Division of Professional and Community Education.
The cost for participants varies, from $15 for local high school students to $50 for community members. GRU students may attend at no cost. For more information, including a full schedule of events, or to register, visit gru.edu/colleges/pamplin/efl/writersweekend.
