The Importance of Being Earnest
A Trivial Comedy for Serious People
by Oscar Wilde
Directed by: Dr. Carolyn Cope

The Importance of Being Earnest premiered on Valentine's Day 1895 in the West End, London. It was Oscar Wilde's fourth West End hit in only three years.

Two young men living in 1890's England have devised a plan for adding some excitement to their love lives. Jack Worthing has invented a brother, Earnest, whom he uses as an excuse to leave his dull country life behind to visit the ravishing Gwendolyn Fairfax. Jack's best friend, Algy Montcrieff, has decided to take the name "Earnest" when visiting Jack's young and beautiful ward, Cecily, at Jack's country manor. Things start to unravel when both couples show up in the country and their deceptions are discovered.
