Augusta Civil War Symposium 1864: War Comes to Georgia

Augusta's Civil War symposium series highlights experiences of Augusta and its citizens during the war. "1864-The War Comes to Georgia" offers talks by noted Civil War authors and a performance of period music.

Allan Gurganus, author of "The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All," reads from his work on Thursday evening. Friday's keynote speaker, Dr. Anne Sarah Rubin, President of the Society of Civil War Historians, presents "Through the Heart of Dixie: Sherman's March and American Memory" which is based on her latest book. On Saturday, Dr. Russell Brown will speak on Augusta native General William H.T. Walker's role in the Atlanta Campaign, and Dr. Carolyn Newton Curry will share her presentation on the life of noted Augusta Civil War-era diarist Ella Gertrude Clanton Thomas. Period music performed by the 8th Georgia Regimental Band of Rome, Georgia concludes the afternoon. The Augusta Museum of History will offer spotlight talks on special war era artifacts from its collection.
