Arrowsmith/Cognitive Exercise Program Information Session
Saturday, April 25 at 10 a.m.
Westminster Schools of Augusta - 3067 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA 30909
Westminster Schools of Augusta will host an information session about its Arrowsmith cognitive exercise program for dyslexic and learning-challenged students on Saturday, April 25, at 10 a.m. at Westminster Schools of Augusta, Building 100 (3067 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA 30909). Parents of middle school-aged students (and others interested in learning about the program) are invited to attend. Westminster students and their parents currently enrolled in the program will speak about their experiences, and attendees will have the opportunity to visit the Arrowsmith classroom.
The 2015-16 school year will mark the third year of Westminster's Arrowsmith classroom as part of its academic support program. This classroom is based on brain plasticity research and seeks to strengthen cognitive capacities through intensive brain exercises. Westminster’s program is designed to help students become successful independent learners as they improve their cognitive abilities for better success in their current classes and into high school and college.
Currently, Westminster is the only school offering this type of program in the CSRA. “Our focus is to help students do more than simply compensate by working around their learning disabilities – this program offers an exciting opportunity for our students to directly improve their cognitive capacities so they can fully, and independently, participate in Westminster’s rigorous academic program,” said Craig Johnson, Academic Dean.
The Arrowsmith Program targets 19 areas of cognitive functioning most needed for academic success. Current research proves that the human brain has the ability to physiologically change and develop new functions. This program has been used for over 35 years in Canada and the United States and has a strong track record of success in strengthening students’ academic abilities.
