30th Annual S.E.E.D. – Science Education Enrichment Day

Date(s): 10/10/2015

10/10/15 10am-3pm

USC Aiken, Aiken SC
Imagine making slime, planting a garden in a glove, exploring windmills, cracking geodes, making paper, driving a championship robot, becoming a TV meteorologist, or traveling through a virtual representation of outer space. These are just a few of the many activities planned for the 30th Annual S.E.E.D. – Science Education Enrichment Day.

Join in on October 10th from 10am-3pm and celebrate innovations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Visit the Ruth Patrick Science Center and other sites on the USC Aiken campus as student groups, regional corporations, museums, government agencies, educators, and national labs join forces to present hands-on activities for people of all ages.

S.E.E.D. is proud to be an Affiliate Festival of the USA Science & Engineering Festival held in Washington D.C. Along with S.E.E.D., organizers of the USA Science & Engineering Festival hope to have a million people join in similar events across the nation, and the best part—IT’S ALL FREE.

Highlights of the 30th Annual S.E.E.D. include:
More than 65 hands on exhibits and activities.
Exhibitors such as the US Army, WAGT 26 Meteorology Team, the American Chemical Society, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, the Columbia Marionette Theatre and MANY more!
Demonstrations of technologies and intriguing science including robotics, nuclear power, urban agriculture, biodiversity and more.

The theme for this year’s event “Explore, Discover, Imagine” was selected because organizers hope to increase the natural curiosity of children to help promote the critical role of science and other STEM career fields.

“One of the goals each year is to give young learners ‘up close and personal’ interaction with real world scientists, engineers and other technical professionals,” said John Hutchens, Director of Special Programs at the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center. S.E.E.D. organizers recognize that as a society we must continue to excite and engage CSRA families in science, technology engineering and mathematics.

S.E.E.D. is presented by the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center on the campus of USC Aiken in conjunction with Aiken County Public Schools.

S.E.E.D. is sponsored by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, SRP Federal Credit Union, NBC 26 / CW, the Aiken Standard and WBBQ, with additional support from Innovative Solutions, Aiken Electric Cooperative, Jeff and Ellen Priest, Fran White, USCA Dining Services and USC Aiken.

Books and Pizza Meet in New Library Book Club

Date(s): 8/10/2015, 9/14/2015, 10/12/2015, 11/9/2015, 12/14/2015

Beginning August 10, The second Monday of each month

Pizza Central in Evans
Evans, GA — Are you ready for a new kind of book club? Columbia County Library staff will host the Pub Fiction book club at Pizza Central in Evans. The group will meet the second Monday of each month, beginning August 10. The first book selection is The Martian by Andy Weir.
“We’ve had suggestions from patrons to do more to appeal to young professionals who aren’t available during normal library hours,” said library reference manager Natalie Gibson. “This book club will be a relaxed meet-up where people can eat some pizza, have a drink, and talk about books that the group will choose.”
“We picked The Martian as the first book because it has mass appeal, and the movie version will be released in October,” said Gibson.
The Martian follows astronaut Mark Watney after a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive--and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old 'human error' are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills--and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit--he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next.

Reservations are recommended but not required. Reserve your spot at augustpubfiction.eventbrite.com. For more library services and information, visit www.gchrl.org or call 706-863-1946.
