Shane Butler is the Chief Meteorologist for News 12. His weathercast can be seen weeknights at 5, 6 and 11. Shane’s forecast can also be viewed on News 12 online and on 12 On Your Cell.
Shane has always had a fascination with weather and how it all works. At the age of ten he obtained a great respect for it by surviving a close encounter with a tornado. He recalls frequent lightning strikes, large hail, and then a brief calm right before the tornado passed by his location. It was a frightening experience but one that taught him firsthand the awesome power of nature.
Shane's educational background started in Alabama at Troy University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism. He went on to study Meteorology at Mississippi State University. He has earned the coveted CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist) seal from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and the Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association (NWA).
Before coming to News 12, Shane worked at WSET, the ABC affiliate in Lynchburg, Virginia. Shane was awarded Best Weathercast by the Virginia Associated Press in 2008 and Best Weathercaster by the Alabama Associated Press in 2001. He also received Best Weathercaster in 1996 and 1997 while working at the CBS affiliate in Atlanta. He has worked as a meteorologist in several other communities including Jacksonville, Florida and Dothan, Montgomery, Huntsville, and Birmingham, Alabama.
In his free time Shane enjoys taking to the skies. He is a licensed pilot and has logged time in various aircraft ranging from a Piper Warrior to a Russian L-39 Jet trainer. On other occasions, Shane enjoys working out at the gym, water and snow skiing, and playing golf.
