Gene Petriello left News 12 at the end of July to become a morning news reporter with NBC 12 in Richmond, Virginia. Gene would like to thank everyone here in the Aiken/Augusta area for making the past two years great. He's met some great people in and around the community, as he is truly thankful for the "Southern Hospitality" given to this "Northern Yankee". He wishes everyone in the area all the best in the future.

Gene joined the News 12 team in July 2007 as a reporter, primarily covering Aiken County. Previously, Gene was a reporter and weekend sports anchor at WAGM in Presque Isle, Maine. He also was a news and sports intern with WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, as well as a news intern at WTAJ in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Ever since high school, Gene has had a love for talking and getting to know as many people as he can. That love for getting to know people and telling people's stories led him into the world of reporting. So far, he's covered stories from uncovering registered sex offenders with incorrect addresses in Aiken County to breaking stories about a junk yard illegally taking cars in for scrap.

Gene won a Georgia Associated Press Broadcasters Association Award in 2007 for Best Use of Sound in a piece about Crystal Davis, a Specialist in the Army who lost a leg while serving our country. She was able to meet Lonestar, a band that inspired her to keep going. Telling her story was quite an inspiration for Gene.

A proud Nittany Lion, Gene graduated from Penn State University in 2006 with distinction from the College of Communications with a degree in broadcast journalism. On Saturday afternoons, you'll find Gene in front of his big screen TV rooting on the Nittany Lions to a National Championship. While at school, Gene reported on the famed Penn State tailgating experience on home football Saturdays.

News 12 Internships
