Melissa Tune, Co-Anchor of News 12 First at Five and Reporter, is currently deployed to Fort Leavenworth for command training.
Melissa grew up in Virginia and considers herself a southern belle. She is excited call Augusta her new home because she says the people are so pleasant and hospitable – and remind her of her home back in the Old Dominion.
Melissa has over 10 years of television news experience. Before joining New 12, Melissa worked in Richmond, Virginia at Virginia’s powerhouse, WWBT-TV where she was an Reporter and Anchor-fill. Prior to that she worked in television in Washington, DC at WTTG-TV and Harrisonburg, Virginia at WHSV-TV as a Bureau Chief and Anchor.
Melissa’s news career was put on hold for two years – when she was mobilized like many Army Reservists. She has 17 years in the United States Army Reserves and is very proud of her service. The military has afforded her opportunities to serve in the Middle East, Germany, Sweden and London, England.
In 2005, while Melissa was deployed, she spent Christmas Day that year in the Middle East, but she didn't spend it alone --she spent it with 2500 other service members from the Navy, Marines and Air Force and Coast Guard. Shortly thereafter, she was promoted to the rank of Major and is still serves as a Public Affairs Officer. Her last active duty assignment was with the Department of Army Headquarters, Office of the Chief, Army Public Affairs at the Pentagon.
Melissa likes to take every opportunity to tell the Army's story, because she says it's the soldier's voice that's often not heard...and believes in telling stories about issues that affect our military service members.
Melissa is from South Boston, Virginia and a graduate of Virginia Tech.
Melissa is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., National Association of Black Journalists, Native America Journalists Association, the Association of the United States Army, (AUSA) and ROA, the Reserve Officers Association. She likes to read and loves to travel and spend time with family and friends.
