March 22, 2014 ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 5 Georgia men's golf team is tied for first place with No. 1 Alabama after the first day of competition at the Linger Longer Invitational at Great Waters and Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga.
The Bulldogs played 36 holes on Saturday, closing the day at 20-under-par with a score of 556. Georgia will look to edge out Alabama on Sunday in the final round of competition.
Senior Joey Garber paced the Bulldogs on Saturday, shooting a 6-under 66 on the first 18 and a 70 on the second round, a total score of 136. Garber is second in the individual race behind Alabama's Robby Shelton (135). Senior Michael Cromie is tied for third with a combined score of 138, shooting a 1-under 71 and 5-under 67. Rounding out the score for Georgia were sophomore Lee McCoy and senior Keith Mitchell. Each golfer shot a combined 141, and they are tied for the 15th spot. Junior Nicholas Reach had the Bulldogs' non-counting score of 1-over 145.
Playing as an individual, freshman Greyson Sigg fired a 5-under 139 in the first two rounds, putting him in seventh in the individual race. Juniors Sam Straka and Mookie DeMoss also competed as individuals. Straka recorded a 3-over score of 147 on the first 36 holes, while DeMoss shot a 5-over 149.
Georgia has won the Linger Longer Invitational three times (2006, 2007, 2009) and boasted the medalist in Chris Kirk in 2007.
