ATLANTA --- Former Bulldog cornerback Paul Oliver passed away in Atlanta on Tuesday at the age of 29.

A native of Kennesaw, Ga., and graduate of Harrison High School, Oliver signed with Georgia and arrived in Athens before the 2003 season. He redshirted his first year before playing the 2004-06 seasons for the Bulldogs.

Oliver played in 38 games during his Georgia career and started 15 of them, including all 13 in 2006. He finished with 94 tackles, three sacks, five forced fumbles and seven interceptions in his career.

“It's heartbreaking for me personally, for our staff, for the Bulldog Nation I'm sure, and obviously for his family,” said Georgia head coach Mark Richt. “I was crushed this morning when I heard it, quite frankly. I really haven't been able to keep it off my mind to be honest with you. We’ve got to find a way to reach out and help in any way we can. If there’s some way that the Bulldog Nation can rally around that family I hope everybody would be encouraged to do so.”

One of Oliver’s highlights was holding current Detroit Lion and former Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson to just two catches for 13 yards in 2006. Oliver snagged an interception in the game’s final minute to help the Bulldogs top the Yellow Jackets 15-12.

The San Diego Chargers used a fourth round pick in the 2007 supplemental draft to take Oliver. He made his debut for the Chargers in 2008 and played in 57 games over the next four seasons. In 2010, Oliver started eight games at safety and tallied 44 tackles, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

Oliver started 12 games in his NFL career (all with the Chargers) and finished with 144 tackles, one sack and four interceptions.

Oliver leaves behind his wife, the former Chelsea Young, and two children.

Funeral arrangements have not bee finalized.
