COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The son of baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. is leaving South Carolina after one year.
South Carolina baseball spokesman Andrew Kitick said Thursday that Ryan Ripken, a first baseman, was leaving the program. Ripken did not make the 35-man roster this spring and was likely to have similar issues making the club because of a logjam behind starter Kyle Martin at the position next season.
Ripken was drafted in the 20th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft by the Baltimore Orioles, the only team his father played for during his career. South Carolina coach Chad Holbrook said last February that he thought the younger Ripken had a great future in the game and that he hoped it would be with the Gamecocks.
