Hampton to miss season following another elbow surgery

April 9, 2007

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Atlanta Braves say pitcher Mike Hampton will have surgery on his left elbow Tuesday (April 10) in New York and will miss the 2007 season.

Hampton, who had Tommy John surgery on the elbow by Dr. Dave Altchek in September 2005, visited Altchek Monday in New York after experiencing more pain.

Altchek found that the 34-year-old left-hander has a torn flexor tendon in the elbow.

Surgery was scheduled for tomorrow at 7 a-m.

Hampton made only 12 starts in 2005 and missed all of last season. He is expected to be able to return to pitching activities in six to nine months. That timetable means Hampton could return for spring training in 2008.

Braves spokesman Brad Hainje says general manager John Schuerholz will have no comment until after tomorrow's surgery.

Hampton signed a 121 (m) million dollar, eight-year contract with Colorado before the 2001 season. He is 53-and-48 since agreeing to that dead and is owed 14-and-a-half (m) million this year and 15 (m) million in 2008.

Hampton went 5-and-3 in 12 starts for the Braves in 2005, struggling much of the season with a sore elbow. His best season was in 1999, when he was 22-and-4 with the Houston Astros.

After Hampton was hurt in spring training, the team signed another left-hander, Mark Redman, who struggled in Friday's loss to the New York Mets.

With Hampton lost for the season, Redman, Kyle Davies and Lance Cormier are the team's top three options for the last two spots in the rotation behind John Smoltz, Tim Hudson and Chuck James.
