COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A South Carolina walk-on football player was dismissed from the team after Columbia police say he was involved in a fight and bit someone on the cheek.

The (Columbia) State reported that 22-year-old Dustyn McElroy took part in a brawl that spilled outside and restaurant. Police say McElroy grabbed a man who was trying to break up the fight, put him a bear hug and bite him on the left cheek and left him with a severe facial laceration.

McElroy was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and malicious injury to personal property. Messages left for the Columbia Police Department were not immediately returned.

McElroy had joined the Gamecocks last fall. He did not appear in any games.
