ATLANTA – Georgia Tech sophomore Gani Lawal has been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference third team, while freshman Iman Shumpert has been named to the ACC’s all-Freshman team in voting announced Monday by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.
Lawal, a 6-9 sophomore from Norcross, Ga., is Tech’s first All-ACC honoree since Javaris Crittenton in 2007, and the Jackets’ first post player so ho0nored since Chris Bosh in 2003. He ranks second in the ACC in rebounding (9.4 per game) and field goal percentage (55.5), and has the most games of 10 rebounds or more (17) and double-doubles (17) of any ACC player this year. He also leads Tech in scoring at 15.0 points per game.
Lawal also earned honorable mention on the league’s all-defensive team. He ranks sixth in the ACC in blocked shots in all games, third in ACC games only.
Shumpert, a 6-5 freshman from Oak Park, Ill., has averaged 10.5 points and 5.1 assists per game this year, playing more than 30 minutes per game. He ranks third in the ACC in assist average and second in steals, and among the league’s freshmen, he ranks third in scoring, first in assists and third in minutes. He is the seventh Tech player to make the All-Freshman team under head coach Paul Hewitt.
