ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia State athletic director Mary McElroy has been fired, the school announced on Thursday.
President Carl Patton has released McElroy from her contract as athletics director, effective Dec. 31, 2008. Patton said the school will start the search for McElroy's replacement at the start of next year.
"While Mary McElroy has worked in support of the Georgia State University athletics mission," Patton said, "I believe it is in the best interest of the university and the athletics program to seek out new leadership."
McElroy, a former senior associate athletic director at Georgia Tech, played an instrumental part in launching a new football program at Georgia State that will begin play in 2010. She also hired Bill Curry in June to become the Panthers' coach.
