COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- In just four days, Clemson has gone from wondering if it would make the postseason to playing in the New
Year's Day Gator Bowl.
The invitation was extended Wednesday to the 7-5 Tigers. They likely will be matched with 8-4 Nebraska. Hundreds of Huskers fans have already booked flights to Jacksonville, Fla., even though the invitation probably won't be extended until Sunday.
Clemson has only played Nebraska once, but fans remember it well: the Tigers beat the Huskers 22-15 in the Orange Bowl to win the 1981 national championship.
Clemson needed a win over South Carolina on Saturday just to be eligible for a bowl. Now the Tigers are playing in their first Jan. 1 bowl since losing to Virginia Tech 41-20 in the Gator Bowl eight seasons ago.
