Sunday, November 16, 2008. (AP) -- Devan Downey scored 21 points and Mike Holmes and Dominique Archie had double-doubles as South Carolina dominated Winthrop 86-63 Sunday.
The win is South Carolina's (2-0) largest margin of victory against the Eagles (1-1) since a 60-41 win on February 18, 1991. The Gamecocks improve to 6-0 all-time against Winthrop, which is now 2-19 vs. SEC teams.
South Carolina opened the game with a 19-0 spurt in the first 7:55. After going 8-for-16 from the field during the run, the Gamecocks closed out the half by shooting 6-for-24, including nine consecutive missed 3-pointers.
The Eagles cut the lead to 41-31 in the second half before South Carolina pulled away.
Holmes had 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in his fifth career double-double while Archie had 12 points and 10 boards.
Justin Burton led the Eagles with 13 points.
