COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Steve Spurrier says he wouldn't know who to start at quarterback if South Carolina had to play this weekend. Spurrier says he might start reserve Zac Brindise at this point since starters Stephen Garcia and Chris Smelley both seem to play better when they come off the bench.
Garcia is the freshman who got the start last Saturday night in a 24-17 loss to LSU. He looked strong in the first half, passing for 160 yards and a touchdown against the Tigers. After halftime, though, Garcia and the Gamecocks faded as they managed only 42 yards of offense. Garcia was sacked six times. The Gamecocks won't play again until Nov. 1 against Tennessee.
