ATHENS, Ga. --- Brian Mimbs, the Georgia Bulldogs' starting punter and holder last season, has been awarded a scholarship for the 2008 season, head coach Mark Richt announced on Thursday.
"Brian has earned the scholarship," said Richt. "He's worked hard during his career and become one of the best punters in the SEC as well as the country. Brian is a great asset to our program and important to the success of our team."
Mimbs, a 5-11, senior from Dublin, Ga., was tabbed third-team All-SEC in preseason balloting of league coaches. Last season, he finished third in the SEC with an average of 42.4 yards on 57 punts. In addition, Georgia ranked third in the SEC and 14th nationally in net punting at 37.86 yards.
A Risk Management and Insurance major in Georgia's Terry College of Business, Mimbs was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District football team last season.
Mimbs is a two-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs. In 2006, he appeared in victories over No. 5 Auburn, No. 16 Georgia Tech and No. 14 Virginia Tech. Mimbs successfully recovered his own on-side kick attempt against Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, a key play in the Dogs' rally from a 21-3 halftime deficit en route to a 31-24 victory.
