SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- The Southern Conference has grown.
The league officially welcomed Samford as its 12th member Tuesday. Samford is the conference's only school in Alabama. The school had been in the Ohio Valley Conference the past five years. Athletic director Bob Roller says the move to the SoCon shows the progression of Samford's athletic program.
Southern Conference commissioner John Iamarino has said the
league will sponsor a fan festival event on Samford's campus to
welcome the school and introduce supporters to the league. Samford's first Southern Conference competition takes place Sept. 26 when its women's soccer team hosts Elon. The football team faces Elon the next day in the program's first league game.
