ATLANTA (AP) -- Brett Garlick broke a 6-6 tie with a two-run
single in the 11th inning that helped Rutgers down Georgia Tech
10-6 tonight. Tom Edwards then drew a bases-loaded walk from reliever Brad Rulon before Jon Gossard ended the 11th-inning rally with a run-scoring single.
Jaren Matthews, who walked and scored the go-ahead run in the
11th on Garlick's hit, had three hits in five trips for the Scarlet
Knights (1-2), including a two-run homer in the first inning off
Tech starter David Duncan.
The victory went to Kevin Lillis (1-0) who had two shutout
innings in relief and the loss went to Chris Hicks (0-1), who was
charged with all four runs in the 11th.
Tech (5-1) forced extra innings at 6-6 when the Jackets scored
four in the ninth. Jeff Ussery's pinch double started the rally
before Jeff Rowland walked and Thomas Nichols singled to load the
bases. Two runs scored on a fielder's choice and error and Chase
Burnette added a pinch-hit two-run single to tie the game.
