Pirates and LaRoche agree

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- First baseman Adam LaRoche and the Pittsburgh
Pirates have avoided arbitration by agreeing to a five-million-dollar deal for the upcoming season. The two sides continue to discuss a multiyear contract.

LaRoche made 3.2 million in his first season with the Pirates in 2007 after coming over in an offseason trade with Atlanta. After getting off to a slow start he ended up batting .272 with 21 home runs and 88 RBIs.

The 28-year-old LaRoche has averaged 24 homers and 85 RBIs in three seasons as a regular with the Braves and Bucs. He had a .326
average over the Pirates' final 77 games last season after his average dipped to .191 in late May.
