Warren County football coach resigns after reporting violation

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

WARRENTON, Ga. -- Warren County Schools confirmed Tuesday morning that Marleau Blount has resigned as the high school's head football coach.

Superintendent Carole Jean Carey received Blount's letter of resignation on behalf of the Board of Education Friday, Aug. 19, before a team scrimmage.

Defensive Coordinator David Daniels has been promoted to the head coach position.

The problem stemmed from a few players on the team practicing without having a physical examination. Georgia High School Association rules require all athletes have a physical done before participating in any team activities.

The school reported the infraction to the state and Blount resigned.

Carey says the school will be fined for the violation, but the team will face no other disciplinary action.

Blount was 11-11 in his two seasons with the Screaming Devils, leading them to the first round of the playoffs each year. He is a lifelong resident of Warrenton and served as an assistant coach for 10 years before being named head coach in 2009.

Warren County opens its football season Friday at Glascock County.
