Augusta, Ga--When you look at the Laney Wildcat football roster from last year, one thing jumps off the page. Just five seniors. So going forward this year, not a lot to replace. Well, when you lose a guy like Rod Hall, there's actually a decent amount of leadership to replace.

But Coach Lemeul Lackey is liking what he sees here in the early going. He's got a very athletic squad coming back with a handful of three year starters. That includes quarterback Leo Myers and offensive linemen Fred Nelson and Marques Eubanks. One goal is to have each kid do a little bit more then a year ago to get back to being a playoff contender.

"Here's the deal. I think you start small and work the kinks out more or less," says Lackey. "You get some of those guys that were close to making plays, you get them to push the level just a little bit more to go over the hump. I think that's a big deal. I think we ended the season pretty well last year in a good game against a quality opponent, but now it's about winning some of those games."

Another thing this team has to do is get a little more physical. They won the games they should have and lost to the better teams. They had chances in those ballgames and now have to finish what they start.

"Be more physical against other teams because last year some games we didn't finish," says Tharius Pryor. "We'll come out strong and not finish at the end, so we got to get better than that."

"Some games I feel we didn't get physical enough, and that's what we're trying to put in the mindset on defense this year, we're trying to get physical," adds Shaquille Hale.

Laney plays in one of the toughest regions around, but with the experience, they should be able to contend with the likes of Swainsboro, Jefferson County and Dublin for a playoff spot in early November.
