Friday, August 16 McCormick, SC
Appearing in a state championship just a year ago, McCormick High School was stuck in a unique situation. A situation, without a head coach.
Former coach Brian Neal left for Aiken in June, and he left the cupboard full of talent for his replacement.
Don't expect a whole lot of changes from the McCormick system. Former offensive coordinator, Bryan Buffkin, has taken on the interim head coaching label.
Buffkin’s team is stocked with talent, size and leadership. Quarterback Jay Weaver is heading in to his third year leading the potent triple option attack.
Whatever doubters McCormick may have, they're out to prove them wrong this year.
“We just want to make believers, and this year we're going to do the same thing. They say we can't get back to state. We've got the same team just as good as last year and we'll be right back there again,” defensive end Kenneth Gunter said.
“Last year, we put a state championship appearance on the board in preseason. A lot of people would say that's just a coach's hopeful thinking. I think we have readjusted the expectations to success on the field,” interim head coach Buffkin said.
Buffkin added he's looking to remove that interim title with a few wins this season. Their success in 2013 may depend on a talented, but young offensive line.
