Hephzibah looking for leaders to take control

Thursday August 11, 2011

Hephzibah, Ga--When you talk Hephzibah football this year, one word comes to mind, leadership. Talk to all the players and the coaches. This is what the Rebels have been lacking on the field, and it's been a big point of focus this season.

With a 4-6 record, Coach John Bowen felt his team was lacking in that department. Part of it was the youth, part of it was kids not stepping forward.

This year they need a couple of guys to take the initiative and be in charge on the field. One of those guys will be quarterback Terry Robinson. Robinson had an underrated year and knows he and others have to take the bull by the horns.

"This year we're looking to have better leadership and come out strong," Robinson says. "We've been practicing hard and just looking to tighten everything up. Last year we did pretty good, but this year everybody is looking to win and put it together."

"We didn't have any distinct leaders. Everybody kind of tried to lead themselves. But this year we're trying to have some set leaders to help lead everybody to the promised land."

It looks like it's going to be running back by committee behind Robinson. While they have skill, they don't have a lot of playing time. They're still looking for some balance that could take some pressure off a work in progress on the defensive side of the ball.

"We're planning on getting back to a more balanced system of run and pass which is where we were in like '08 and '09. Getting in those shootouts can make for long nights," says Bowen.

The Rebels have changed a lot of the terminology so it's taking some time for the players to pick up the scheme. If they get there quick, this could be a dangerous team to play on Friday nights.
