Augusta, Ga--Last year was a struggle for the Spartans of Glenn Hills. Coach Andrew Young took over the program late in the summer, and it was a season of playing catch up with the new man in charge. This year, Young returns and a different attitude is coming with him.
While they might not have the greatest number of players, they do have some speed. Germaine Tait and Davonte McCloud are back in the backfield and will be called upon to carry the load. Both are seniors and are trying to elevate the entire program so it's in good shape when they leave. They have some young kids up front, but are confident they'll be able to get it done on Friday nights.
"I depend on my linemen and I know they're going to get the job done and they'll take care of me and the rest of the running backs and we'll win the game," Tait says.
"We spent a lot more time in the weight room and have gotten stronger," says Young. "I went back and watched a lot of film, and I tried to tweak our blocking to our advantage. We have some real good backs and skill people so I changed a few blocking assignments on the line."
Things have been a lot smoother with Young returning, and the guys have bought into the system and work ethic. A good portion of this team will play on both sides of the ball, so they'll have their hands full there, but with experience in the skill positions this could be a sleeper team as the season rolls on.
