Augusta, Ga--Another football team can claim a state title Friday night, this may be the most surprise of them all, Curtis Baptist from the Georgia independent ranks.
For years they were the homecoming game for a lot of schools. Mired with two, or three wins year after year. But the past five seasons the culture has changed. Coach Nate Duffie has instilled a new system and all of a sudden they started winning. First four games, then six and now this, 11 wins and a shot at the crown. Despite having a lot of underclassmen, these guys are as hungry as ever.
"It was our first time ever going to the playoffs last year and we remember that feeling that we had when we lost and we didn't want to feel like that anymore" said Trey Reid "So we got everybody as a team and started coming to summer workouts and we wanted to make something happen for Curtis and make a big difference"
"We knew the results would come, we knew we had some talent" said Nate Duffie "We had a lot of juniors which kind of worried us a little bit in the leadership category but they came through and played hard last Friday and they earned this right to play on Saturday"
Heck, they only have four seniors this year as they get ready for Robert Toombs Academy on Saturday. Even coach Duffie isn't sure how they'll react seeing it's all new to them. That'll be a noon kick on the campus of Mercer.
