Waynesboro, Ga--It was a season to remember for Burke County, a first of its kind state championship for the Bear program. So what do they do for an encore? We'll find out in the next three months or so.
In early December, Eric parker and his squad hoisted the trophy high overhead in the Georgia Dome. Now, back on the practice field, working hard to start defense of that crown. A different mindset now a days in waynesboro as they went from the hunter to the hunted.
"I just hope our kids understand the magnitude which they have to approach this season as far as defending the things that they've earned and worked hard for. It's not like people are going to sit around and let you keep it, you know what I mean." said coach Eric Parker
"It gives us a lot of confidence but we still have to put in the hard work and try to defend what we have" said jeremy Gordon "We lost a whole bunch of seniors but we're still going to go out there and try to our best to go out and win all our games."
Some holes to fill on the Bear roster Guys like Corey Mayton, Dan Lambert and Montres Kitchens are gone. Donquell Green and other juniors from a year ago need to step up their game. One challenge for Parker, get these guys mentally ready for what lies ahead.
"I really don't think it's a physical position, I just think was that hunger and intensity that built among this team over the last two years." added coach Parker "They really had a focus. They really had a job that they wanted to get done and we've got to get that sense of urgency with this team"
Don't expect a big drop off, and we may not see any at all. Week one could be a tell tale sign as they take on Thomson right out of the gates. It'll be a good test to see how the new faces in new places can handle the pressures of being state champs.
