A new era with Westminster football

Tuesday August 24, 2010

Augusta, Ga--Butterflies, excitement, anticipation, just some of the emotions the kids from Westminster are starting to experience. After all, Friday marks their first ever varsity football game.

Ryan Bowers is the man in charge of running the first year program and so far, likes what he sees, especially in the attitude department. Most of these guys have very little football experience, but what they may lack in that, they make up for with desire and work ethic.

"I'll be honest with you, I came out here not knowing what to expect when these guys put pads on" said coach Ryan Bowers "With each day, they're getting more and more familiar with it and again, we're just getting better."

"We have the athleticism, we just have to get the aggressiveness" said Nick Newsome "We're an aggressive soccer team so we just have to hit hard when we come play and we'll be good."

One thing Westminster has that some schools don't, a winning tradition. Sure it's not in football, but look at the success they've had on the soccer fields. Everyone here is a firm believer it'll carry over with the winning attitude.

"We all want to win really bad" said quarterback Thomas Mehrhof "Everybody on this team hates losing and honestly I think we expect to win, we can win."

"I'm real excited, I'm not nervous at all" said Akonwi Ngoh, who's never played football "It's something new and I got to enjoy something new. Of course I'm going to be a little bit worried being that we're a little inexperienced but it's O.K."

While most measure success in wins and losses, for a first year program, they'll measure it in improvement from week to week. Since their jamboree a couple of weeks ago, coach bowers is happy with the progress heading into Friday's opener.
