Edmund Burke expecting big things in 2010

Tuesday August 24, 2010

Waynesboro, Ga--A year ago the Spartans of Edmund Burke may have snuck up on a few people and wound up in the state semifinals in the independent ranks. No sneaking up on people this time around seeing now know how good the program has become.

This is coach Buddy Sorrow's third year at the helm and things have changed. They players will be the first to tell you things are more organized and sorrows will let you know when you're out of position. Ask him though and he'll be the first to tell you being successful one year, can be a double edged sword.

"But sometimes that's not as good as you think it is." said coach Buddy Sorrow "Sometimes they get a little, what I call, complacency with them because they get a little over confident thinking what they did last year carries over this year and it doesn't carry over, you have to start it all over again."

For the most part, this should be a very talented team. Logan Christian returns at quarterback and he'll be flanked by skill guys like Alex Sturkie and Lane Clark. Up front is where they may be lacking. Just two seniors return and the rest of the guys are unproven. But the expectations of taking the next step remains the same.

"Well we've gotten a little closer." said senior Alex Sturkie "We had a bunch of seniors leave so us juniors stepped up a lot in leadership, that's about it. We have a lot of speed this year so I think we'll be fine."

"What we look at is we need to win the games we should win, and then there's some toss up games in there and you need to win more then you lose those, then every now and then beat somebody you're not suppose to and you'll have a good season then."

The Spartans will be tested right out of the gate as they square off with Briarwood, another playoff team, on Friday night.
