Defense to lead Evans early on

Thursday August 12, 2010

Evans, GA--Over the past three years Evans has racked up 28 wins and have made trips into the state playoffs. For the Knights to do it again, they'll probably have to step it up a notch.

This year it will start on defense. After losing their quarterback and top running back, the pressure for young kids to fill the holes becomes a lot greater. But with a solid corp coming back on defense, there's no reason they can't carry the team until the other side of the ball finds the right gear.

"Defense is going to have to carry us early, that's for sure" said coach Marty Jackson "Last year the offense was the veteran group but you know I think the defense will have to carry us early plus we're going to have some guys going both ways. We have some speed on "d", we have a little bit of size and we have like 30 seniors."

"We definitely aren't going to be the team we were last year" said senior Austin Jackson "Just stopping the run and working on the basics but we've been working hard this summer so I think we're going to get things to happen this year."

The quarterback slot is a concern. Troy Griffith is gone and three guys are currently battling for the number one spot. Each has never really taken snaps at the varsity level. That's where the talents of Jamerson Turner comes in. He'll be the go to guy at running back.

"All the pressure is trying to fill Jonathan Finch's shoes" said running back Jamerson Turner "Trying to keep my team together and take us to the next level."

"Jamerson is a slasher type running back. He can run, he's got great speed, great work ethic. Quiet leader but he leads and he's excited about being here."

Coach Marty Jackson also indicated there may be a bunch of guys who play both ways this year. Their tough playoff loss to Ware County also serving as motivation for Evans to keep the ship headed in the right direction.
