Edgefield, SC--In the past six years, Strom Thurmond has been racking up the wins left and right. Last year's 10 and 3 mark, even surprised coach lee sawyer considering the number of young players he had in the lineup. This year, the bar has been raised.

While they don't have a ton of starters back on offense, the Rebels may rely on the defense a little more then usual to start the year. Sure they lost a couple of three year starters but sawyer likes the guys who've stepped up and taken over some of those leadership roles.

"You know on paper, I guess coming in would be defensively I guess is where we have the most starters back." said coach Lee Sawyer "Really we don't have but four starters back on offense but I've been pleased with the progress of our offense so far. But defensively it should be our strength, we have a lot of experience back there."

On the other side of the ball, it's in the hands of quarterback Raleigh Yeldell, who according to sawyer has elevated his game, but now needs to do it on Friday nights. An off season injury to running back Tony Stepney has set them back but the hard work these guys are putting forth should pay off.

"We worked hard all summer" said senior Chris Griffin "We try our best to be the best we can be by the time the playoffs come around so I'm really excited about the season so we can see how the season comes down."

"What I like about this team I guess is a lot of mixture in the sophomore, junior and senior class" added Sawyer "It's kind of spread out which helps you years down the road but we do have a lot of people returning."

That Rebel defense will be tested right out of the gate as they host Williston Elko a week from Friday. But with a new region featuring Columbia area teams, Thurmond football should be a strong as ever.
